Review on WAHL πŸ”₯ ISO-TIP 7700 Solder Iron by Trevor Blazis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Designed in the 70's and still reliable

I've heard good things about these soldering irons and their lifespan so I decided to buy this one to help in my search for a portable soldering iron. I work on stairs, in elevators, on ceilings and other places where corded irons are annoying and it really helps in those situations. My favorite feature is that it heats up when needed, with 45W in such a small peak, easy temperature control and very quick heat-up. I really like this iron and expect it to last for many years. To solve a few problems: the lamp is NOT an LED. This is because this iron was developed in the 70's and not much has changed. I'm very happy with a regular bulb because it's very easy to remove. What I did first I hate the lights that come with the tool because they usually have a terrible working angle. Even if I'm not using a soldering iron in a well-lit area, I still use a headlamp or something. Ni-Cad battery. This is my least favorite thing about this iron as nickel cadmium batteries have a low capacity and memory effect. However, the maximum battery voltage is around 2.8V and the power of the tips is 45W. This is over 15 amps of current when the iron is initially heated. Ni-Mh batteries can't really handle that much current, and Li-Po batteries with protection circuitry designed for them are hard to find in such a small size, so I'm willing to excuse that. (That didn't stop me from working on the upgrade design.) Finally, there's no indicator light on the charging station. That's because "the design hasn't changed" and I honestly agree. Being a nickel-cadmium battery, continuous charging is good for the battery, so I just leave it on the stand when it's not in the toolbox. Overall, this is a solid device (especially for the price) that I would use (with little maintenance) for a long time.

Pros
  • Up to 125 solder joints per charge.
Cons
