I bought this for my bedroom to deal with dry skin and nose in the cold season when the relative humidity tends to be under to drop to a comfortable level. I run it at the lowest speed almost constantly and it has increased the relative humidity from less than 40% to 50-60% which has been very helpful. He uses about half a gallon of water a day this way. I've only used distilled water and haven't had any issues with scale, mold or buildup of any kind. About once a week I turn the absorbing filter upside down because whatever has been treated to inhibit germ growth tends to get mixed up with the water to migrate to the top of the filter and accumulate there over time, causing a slight tan discoloration which is then washed away. . . after turning the filter over. As long as the fan motor lasts, it looks like a winner.
