It took some time and a few hours for the Epson Support Line plus purchasing a replacement printer, but eventually it turned out that the Epson XL-6000 and XL-6100 fit (at least). the chip into their own proprietary ink cartridges, resulting in the printer being unable to function without those special cartridges, which are ridiculously expensive. The whole thing was very annoying and is entirely up to Epson. I'm not inclined to buy another brand of printer just to appease my anger. I think alternative cartridge manufacturers should be aware of this.
