Good sound but skip function doesn't work with S8+ or Pixel 2

Bought two of these, sound quality is good, earbuds are comfortable enough but two forward or reverse options don't work. Two quick presses on the middle button should move forward once and three quick presses should go back, but they only increase/decrease the volume. Malfunction?
