My son will be 1 in 2 weeks so my husband and I decided to buy him a tricycle for his birthday. I built a tricycle with my kid crawling around screaming like a banshee with no major issues (other than smoke and paint shavings, more on that later). This took about 30 minutes. I needed a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a hammer (according to the instructions), although I would have preferred a rubber mallet. The box was well packaged and obviously boxed for parents with kids running around stuffing things in their mouths. There were no tiny screws or sharp objects falling off as all small items were packed in tight packaging. All other items were individually wrapped in plastic/paper, nothing sharp fell out when unwrapped (e.g. staples, wires, etc.). It has made my life so much easier! The instructions were easy to read, as is every IKEA furniture diagram. After assembling it, my head started hurting from rubber fumes. Unfortunately it hasn't gone away (both the headache and the smell). After assembling it, my son was very happy with it. He tried using it as a walker but didn't injure himself as the pedals were safely covered by the footrest. The seat is not that comfortable and there is no padding in this kit. Since my son is not very tall, he could barely reach the footstool and had to lean to one side to get at least one of his feet touching the rest. The presence of those side flaps finally made sense. Overall he still enjoyed the ride, held on tight to the wheel and felt freer and more adventurous than in a sidecar. Because it was low and open, it could easily touch things like plants and bushes. From the parents' point of view, the handling is easy, albeit with a little hesitation. I would like a tighter fit on the handle, although this is not a big minus. The hood is definitely not big enough so I would have to add a flap that I could remove if needed, like an extended stroller hood. The parent's bag is handy, fitting a cup but not suitable for an open cup or Starbucks. Better take a water bottle with you when you walk around with it. The trunk at the rear of the hang glider is wide and offers space for folding umbrellas and cuddly toys. Tires feel very good on bumpy roads. There are no shock absorbers so it's definitely a bumpy ride for my kid. However, the trike overcomes bumps without much effort, which is a huge plus compared to plastic tires, which are mainly used indoors. After 2 laps around the neighborhood, it creaks as soon as you turn right. I have yet to find out the cause but it seems like a bit of WD40 will fix the problem. I would give this trike 5 stars considering my previous complaints were so minor. But what I was most concerned about was chipped paint. THE FIRST DAY I assembled the trike my teething son grabbed the handlebars and started chewing on them. I didn't mind since they were metal and just grabbed the bar from his hands as soon as I noticed. However, by the end of the day, I realized that he was already breaking paint. I'm pretty sure he ate the paint. It was difficult to see anything in the room as the metal and paint were almost the same shade. It took FL's bright sunlight to see the damage its teeth had done. I am very annoyed that the paint peels off so easily. For a toy intended for teething children I would expect better paint quality. But no. I picked at the peeling paint with my fingernail and it came off easily. Now I would have to watch him like a hawk every time he bites the trike. Overall, the price isn't bad, but I'd definitely pay $30 more if it didn't improve the chipping of the paint. UPDATE: A week in use, the trike now pulls heavily to the right. We pushed it onto the pavement and the front wheel just jerked to the right with no bumps or debris on the road or my son jerking the steering wheel or any other impact. It's like a ghost turning a wheel. This is very annoying because we have to be very vigilant and fix the problem immediately, otherwise we will end up with an overturned tricycle or a runaway tricycle hitting random objects. We have yet to find out why. For that we are deducting the stars, from 4 to 2. It is unacceptable for a riding device to have such a problem within a week.
