Review on Ubiquiti Unifi AC-LR-US Wireless Access Point - Long Range 802.11 B/A/G/n/AC, White by Stephanie Byrd

Works great but has a few caveats

This Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC-LR Wireless Access Point was purchased to replace a 9 year old Apple AirPort Extreme. It is easy to install, has a longer range and a higher speed. The management software (which you should use) offers many options and reports great stats, including the ability to listen to channel usage so you can choose the best channels to work with. I would like to point out a few potential downsides to be aware of: 1. This is not a router. This seems to surprise many people, especially home users. But I've always used a separate router, so no problem.2. It's powered via an ethernet connection, which is great for a commercial setup but annoying for a home setup.3. The controller software must be used during installation and is best run 24/7. No problem if you have a server computer (like me). Once launched, it's accessible via a web browser on any of your computers (nice).4. The software made initial setup easy, but navigating it to make changes can be a daunting task until you get comfortable with its organization. Although I only use one device since it's a commercial access point, it's easy to add more devices to cover a larger area. (e.g. to fill in dead zones). However, keep in mind that this is not a mesh network and you need truly wired Ethernet for each device for best results. Luckily I have ethernet that extends to the ends of my house so I can easily expand coverage if needed, but it seems to work fine in our 2200 square feet. Our property is 1/4 acre.

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • Bad experience
