Review on Visioneer OneTouch 8900 USB Scanner by Nico Ramdeen

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A few years later still no problems, this inexpensive scanner works perfectly thanks

For about $100 I got a Visioneer One Touch 8900 USB flatbed scanner that works on my old computer many years and satisfied with his work. My operating system is Windows ME (yes, some of ours still exist) and I used the PaperPort Twain software that came with the scanner. Although it takes some getting used to and you may have to repeat the scan several times, by then you'll know what you're doing without making any more mistakes, and the results you'll get are mostly acceptable, sometimes just excellent. A high quality print made with film technology will not usually produce the same result when transferred to digital information as some degradation is inevitable. cropping and scaling discreetly, and then carefully, you might be able to do a pretty good job. In a photo lab, especially a color lab, you'll have to put in a lot more effort to get a quality enlargement and the results will be much better in several ways, but that's to be expected. Over the past few months I've used this device to scan several high quality photographs, some decades old, for insertion into the text of computer-edited books. I got pretty darn good results considering the limitations of the equipment. I am currently looking for a dedicated film scanner for direct scanning of medium format and 35mm color negatives. Hopefully it will give me darkroom quality results, but nonetheless, this economical workhorse flatbed scanner has more than paid for itself over the past few years. and that's why I have to enthusiastically give it a thumbs-up. I agree with the reviewers who point out that Visioneer's support leaves a lot to be desired because I tried to contact them about a software update (for film scanning - obviously bundled with the 8920) and nothing at all could get, but that poor attitude in the computing world combined with lackluster or non-existent support is hardly a unique selling proposition for Visioneer.
