There is a metal strip on the underside which prevents the top edge from lying flush. It increases the diameter so it doesn't sit in my 1.2" drain hole. The ring underneath sits directly over the drain hole instead of sitting in it as the ring makes the diameter look more like 1.3 or 1.4 inches rather than 1 inch. How do you say. But maybe it doesn't matter, because even though it's not in place, the rinse water flows back into the sink. No soapy water, no tuft of hair, just water. Instead of freely draining through the holes, the water mostly exits UNDER the screen. The holes need to be a little bigger due to the molecular nature of water, not much. Too many problems to return it. Keep searching. The drain hole is over 1.3 inches and you'll love it when the water runs down the sink. Good stainless steel quality. Too bad it's useless.
