Good descaler, suitable for filtering and softening water

I live in Northern California where the water is very hard. After using it for over 3 months I have noticed a reduction in hard water stains. However, I just found another product that offers the same type of service for 20% off the price of this product. This product is expensive, and by the time you can decide if this product is effective, the return window is long past. Watch out for alternative products on the market!
