Review on πŸ’§ Enhanced Waterdrop Backwash Spin Sediment Filter: Boost Your Water Quality Safely by John Miller

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works great, but I disagree with calling NPT streams.

I would give this product 5 stars for its performance and ease of installation if the threads were actually NPT as advertised. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon problem. NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads have many specifications, but in short they are tapered, so they tighten as you twist. For example, the outside diameter of the end of a pipe thread is smaller and gradually increases toward the center of the pipe. When screwing pipes and fittings together, the threads become tighter and tighter. The Teflon tape or pipe lube used on the threads is simply a lube that allows the pipes to be rolled apart far enough to form a good seal. The 1" thread on the outside of this filter is too short (doesn't go up the pipe far enough) and doesn't have an adequate threaded hole to screw the fitting in deep enough to get a tight fit and make a good seal without using thread sealant. If the instructions say "apply a minimum of 10 turns of Teflon tape to a thread," you know the thread is not NPT compliant. The layers of Teflon tape are used as a sealant, not a lubricant. Since this has become such a common problem, I suspect parts are made overseas and NPT standards don't translate well to standard metric tools. I think I should just expect this to happen in the future. :(
