Review on πŸ”’ Ubiquiti Networks Unifi Security Gateway Pro 4 by Juan Russell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Big improvement over the entry-level model

First, good. This is significantly better than the entry-level USG. I had to upgrade as I had a faster internet connection. The smaller model has a maximum speed of around 200Mbps with most features disabled and hardware offloading enabled. This model still has most features disabled, but I can get speeds from 500Mbps to 600Mbps. Enabling Threat Management significantly slows down the device. Ubiquiti has a high-end model (XG) that has been off the market for a while due to issues. I hope they bring this product back and add something between this PRO and XG model or improve the features. A gigabit connection cannot work on this model and it is clear that even at 500 Mbit/s the PRO is not powerful enough for heavy workloads. I really like the control features of the Unifi gear and that's a big selling point. It was also fairly easy to upgrade from the smaller USG to the professional model. I hope they come out with a slightly faster model and consider moving to a 2.5Gb/s nbase-T connection so they don't have to upgrade to fiber optic connections for moderate performance. .If you were to use a connection of say 300Mbps most of the features would work and you would be very happy with it. I just don't think it's ready for speeds from 500Mbps to Gigabit. Finally, the IPv6 support on this device is mediocre. Part of the problem is my cable provider's upstream router, but the IPv6 support seems belated and a little cumbersome when trying to set it up. There is no documentation in this area. I can get the IP address on the WAN interface but could never get it to assign an internal network IP address. If you need IPv6 functionality, it might be better to use another product.

  • Impressive
Cons
  • Somewhat serviceable
