I bought six of these. They come with everything you need for installation: base, screws, and drywall anchors. I didn't use dowels because the screws shouldn't be subjected to too much stress and screwed them directly into the ceiling. Be careful not to keep turning after the screw head is flat or you'll be chewing on the drywall and need those anchors. Either way, installation is easy with a Phillips (#2 standard) screwdriver. The block fits easily into the base and makes a healthy click when the block engages properly. It also flashes a red light to let you know it's activated. I've pressed the test button on each one to get my eardrums cursing, but I know they all work. Luckily I didn't have to find out if they could detect smoke effectively. I hope I never find out.
