Review on Denon AVR-X4700H 8K Ultra HD 9.2 Channel AV Receiver (2020 Model) – IMAX Enhanced, Gaming Ready, Music Streaming, Alexa + HEOS by Kevin Samuels

HDMI is bad, possibly a bad block.

I bought this to replace my AVR-X4000 due to the improved video performance. I switched to a 4k projector, Blu-ray and AppleTV and the old AVR could only support 1080i. Setup was easy as almost everything looks identical to the X4000. The audio output after calibration with their excellent Audissey system is incredible. The big disappointment was that the high-speed video didn't run smoothly and sometimes failed completely (snow). I spent a day tweaking the input levels and turning the conversion on and off. I even swapped out the 8k 48Gb/s cables I bought for the new device with a different set but to no avail (cable length 3ft before and 6ft after the receiver - not long). Followed all the "advice" on the Denons website but ended up calling support. After an hour of work with a technician (who was busy taking care of his baby - probably at home) I had to give up and get an RMA for the unit. I would have ordered a replacement device, but then the technician finally explained that it was "normal" for the receiver to sync the HDMI signal for up to a minute. Not to mention that it crashes in the middle of a show or doesn't sync at all! I went back to my old receiver and bought an external video switcher instead.

Pros
  • Does not support pass-through from all 4K/120Hz media sources
Cons
  • Almost OK
