Saving My Sanity on Collars

We recently rescued a 45 pound German Shepherd Lab mix who is afraid of people, especially males. We live in a busy city center where even on short walks we have to pass literally hundreds of people. As soon as she gets into a state of terror (usually about 10 steps away from the front door), a mad twitching, whining and throwing in all directions begins. There's nothing I can say or do or do to get her attention back. It was exhausting and disappointing. Our canine behavior specialist recommended this particular collar and it has worked wonders. Now, when she reaches the end of the leash, she stops abruptly so I can walk through busy neighborhoods to her favorite quiet park without my arm being yanked out of its socket and random bystanders staring at me and yelling dog training tips ("What are you , have you ever seen The Dog Whisperer? You should check it out!) Once we're in a quiet, quiet place where I can get her attention, the collar helps me work on proper walking behavior with her. It shows definitely small steps forward. I'm no longer afraid to go outside with her and I have hope that we can actually overcome her fear of exhaustion. It's amazing what can be accomplished when you have the right tools.
