You can go back home!

Holly Helmstetter Scandinavian Wind Chimes After assembling my new Scandinavian Wind Chimes tonight and lighting the candles, I settled into a comfortable armchair and closed my eyes. Gentle "Ting! Ting! Ting!" brought me right back to childhood. Our tiny cottage (16 x 24 feet) was often noisy as I was one of six children, we occasionally giggled or argued and were almost always very happy. But there were times of deep peace. Some of us kids slept on a fold-out couch in the living room, which also had a Christmas tree in the corner. One night, right after Christmas, I was awake there (my brothers and sisters were asleep) looking at the Christmas tree still lit. Our first set of Angel Chimes sat on a small shelf in the corner, being air rotated from the floor oven. Although my parents were still awake, they were in their room changing to bed and I couldn't hear them. All was perfectly still except for the soft, fabulous tinkling of angel bells. Somehow, the barely audible sound added to the utter calm and stillness of the Christmas cheer. I also remember sitting and looking at it another time with the intention of making it look like it was spinning in the opposite direction. You know, you can do it if you focus hard enough. About 62 years ago, our family received the first set of these magic bells from one of our virgin aunts. As an adult I have my own home, including through all the years raising my own children I've usually managed to have a set for each Christmas. Some parts were lost last year. The new set I recently ordered from Revain arrived today. There may be slight differences between the first set and this one, but they're essentially the same. Yes, the set is made of very thin metal. (Our first set also had one.) Yes, for those building it for the first time, assembly can be confusing. But it's the same in all essential qualities. And it's definitely worth the effort. Rather than taking it apart after Christmas and putting it back together next year, this year I'm putting it in a box that it fits in fully assembled, ready to go when I open the box next year. (I applied a tiny drop of clear glue to each of the motionless joints.) To me, this is a precious treasure, unique in its position as a part of each new Christmas. I love the fact that it has become a tradition that is continued among my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
