Review on πŸ“» Retevis 144/430MHz Amateur Dual-Band Base Antenna with 7.2dBi High Gain – 2m/70cm Repeater Antenna for Ham Radio Mobile Transceivers (1 Pack) by Jacob Richardson

Poor performance and very high SWR on higher UHF and GMRS bands.

I asked Retevis about the 462MHz SWR before I bought it (see their answer in the Questions/Answers above). A great sounding answer was given with the promise of low SWR. Well the antenna arrived quickly and I looked forward to picking it up and entering the cabin. Easy to assemble and the quality is very good. It even had an O-ring between the two mast sections, which I've never seen on other manufacturers. Unfortunately, performance was very poor at higher UHF frequencies, so I decided to test SWR over IP. Was shocked by returns above 3 at 462.550 and never dipped below 2.75 for the entire GMRS spectrum. I ended up checking all the cables (LMR400 at 40ft) and all the fittings. According to the seller's answers, the antenna is not adjustable, but upon inspection, the lower element is installed with set screws. A little clipping and the low approaching 462 and the SWR dropped to about 2.45 +/- GMRS. Another point is that the antenna on GMRS oscillates to 1.13 when the three ground antennas are removed and then jumps back to high 2 with them after installation. Different than you might expect. As a result, the SWR is too high for use in the upper UHF band and the performance on 2 m and 70 cm is negligible. I do not recommend looking better.

Pros
  • Effective generator protection against strong winds and thunderstorms
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
