Review on πŸͺš Makita 9741 Wheel Sander 3500 RPM by James Roper

nice tool but could be much better

Mixed feelings it would be much better if someone, preferably Makita, made a very coarse nylon brush. I use this to clean and reveal the patina of very old wood, both hand hewn logs and wood that is at least 70 years old. It's the best I've used for the job and the only alternative I know of is the tedious manual wire brushing. This tool *can* be *a little* aggressive on softwoods, but not so aggressive that you can easily go through the patina. Speaking of durability. I've been using it for a year, probably on about 50 8x8x8 inch bars, and the performance has degraded. enough that I just ordered a new brush. ($170 on Amazon and currently on a 20% sale.) I charge by time, so this cost is like sandpaper to me, no matter how hard paying $170 for a brush is. Regarding; other uses. I would not recommend buying this wood aging tool. I tried it on new wood. I want a much more aggressive brush. There is a wire brush, but most reviews say it only polishes the wood surface. I didn't want to try. But if you need to clean up old wood, need to keep the texture as close to the original as possible, and your time is money, this is the best I've found. The dust collector connects very well to a good shop vacuum, although I had to fiddle to connect it to my old Porter corded shop vacuum.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Some bugs
