Easy to set up, light sensor useless

Bought after reading a review. I also see that Tractor Supply sells this brand and I don't need anything other than the basic model for my chicken coop. I just wish the door would open and close at sunrise and sunset when I'm out of town over the weekend. Pros: It was really easy to set up. We went to the local hardware store and used our current door which we have as it was under the 8lb limit. With some tweaking and side rails, we installed this pretty quickly. We were a little confused when when setting up and installing the batteries, the instructions say the door closes fully and then opens once to measure distance. However, we tried this several times and it never happened once. After resetting the door by removing the batteries for a few minutes and replacing, the door fell down a few inches and opened again. Confused, we hoped for the best and left. We observed and made sure the door was securely closed that night and opened the next morning. Since then it has been working and has no problems opening and closing. Cons: The instructions are very vague. While setup is easy, the instructions for setting up the light sensor are terrible. First, finding a tiny screw to locate the light sensor is difficult. Once you find that screw, it's hard to tell where you turned it and which way you turned it in the past. We've found that it doesn't matter which way we turn the light sensor (light or dark) from the guide. It didn't matter when the door was opened and closed. The door opens quite late in the morning (around 9:30am) and when it's pitch dark outside (10pm). All in all: We are sending this opener back. The light sensor does not work. We have predators that kill our chickens at sunset and need a secure lock before it gets pitch black outside. We also need a block that opens a bit earlier as we all know chickens love early mornings. I found myself running outside in the morning and letting the chicks out through the side door and having to close it at night. This product just didn't work for us.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
