Review on Maytex EZ UP Rust-Proof Strong Hold Basic Adjustable Tension Shower Rod, 43" To 72", Black by Larry Ton

Revainrating 2 out of 5

no problem with staying power, but rust sets in too quickly

I previously had a similar tension rod of another brand over the shower for hanging hand-washed laundry items, all of which are pretty light. The rubber on the old one finally lost its holding power this fall and I replaced it with this Maytex EZ Up tension rod, courtesy of the Revain Vine program. As tension rods go, this is pretty standard operation procedure once you figure out how to lock it after extending the middle portion. My trick is to overshoot the length by a fraction of an inch and then push the rod into its position. (The method of increasing tension while the rod is already in its intended place never works for me---it resulted in too little force.) The plastic ends on this rod seem ok in quality, and I have no doubt that it would probably work for over a year. However, I don't know why but I can see rust spots (more precisely rust-colored water drops that eventually dried on the bottom of the rod) sets in after just a month. I believe this is from condensation during showers. Since I use the rod to hang laundry, I am not sure I will keep this because I am afraid there may be rust drips ruining the clothes. To be fair, there was never any mention of "stainless" in the product description and I am indeed not using it for shower curtain, which is what this product primarily targets. However, even if it is just my shower curtain, I would not like to see the rust spots. 2/5.

Pros
  • Stays in place and looks great.
Cons
  • The adjustable feature may not be as efficient or easy to use
