I bought this to transport my stuff from the 3rd floor apartment to the truck and then to the new ground floor apartment. It is not possible to carry things down the stairs. The straps are adjustable but will NOT stay in place. Even when walking on a floor, the straps were loosened to the maximum length. If they're too long they'll either drag on the floor or you'll have to step back to get enough tension to hold them (and good luck keeping them on the straps like that, I know I couldn't) . They help distribute the weight, but in practice you can't use them for moving, only for lifting.
