Review on ๐Ÿถ Hakuna Pets Super Tough Dog Pet Door: Screens with 2-Way Locks for Extra Durability by Candice Davis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is a very well designed product.

I needed to install this pet door in my patio gate so it was a two day project for me. I started with a 35" square piece of 1/2" thick plywood to which I attached the pet door according to the assembly instructions that came with it. Once I saw how it should come together and made sure my cutout was even and square, I removed the pet door and applied two coats of exterior paint to each side of the plywood. The next day I removed the screen and aluminum panel from the bottom half of the patio door and attached the painted plywood to the inside of the patio door frame (using 8 self-tapping roofing screws with neoprene rubber washers). With that, I finished the job by attaching the pet door to the plywood. I'm an extreme DIYer and perfectionist, so I'm always happy when I find a product that I need to put together to be well designed. This pet door is definitely one of them and I am very happy with the purchase. BTW, the main reason I chose this door over the other two is because it fits in a "door" that's only 1/16 inch thick (which I thought was a bug on the Revain product page; I needed one confirmation that it is not a typo). The other two pet doors I considered won't work with a 1/2 inch piece of plywood. Turns out many doors won't be on the market so this was a deterrent for me. I only have one small complaint and it concerns the installation instructions. While they were brief (to say the least), they were also clearly defined. But they left out one important piece of information: the back (outside) half of the pet door frame needs to be oriented a certain way (because the top two corners are straight and the bottom two corners are curved). Think of it as assembling a sandwich using two slices of white bread, and when you're done, turn the sandwich over and notice that the bottom slice of bread is upside down compared to the top one. This frame WILL BE CONNECTED like this - backside down - and you won't notice the problem until you assemble it. I know it's true because I did it. After assembling the frame I went out to check the other side of the door and was dismayed to find that the frame was warped in several places. I had to disassemble the assembly, align the back half of the frame properly, and screw everything back together. Note to manufacturer: You should either change the position of some of the screw posts so they don't overlap when both frame parts are properly aligned, or (simpler solution) place an indicator on the inside of the rear half of the frame and annotate the assembly instructions accordingly . Below: I like this frame very much and can recommend it to others. (Let's see how long it lasts on the west side of my Florida home.)
