I used the screws that come with the kit. I suggest you install it like this: Drill 1 hole with a 1/16" drill bit, then screw in the screw "half" so that after drilling the 2nd hole (next to the first one drilled) can see where the hole is screw in the 2nd screw. If you put in the first screw and tighten, you'll have a hard time finding the 1/16" hole you drill next to it. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps. Installed easily and go in 1 kayak trip seems to be sturdy so far I don't know anything about its long-term reliability yet.
