Review on Bellemain Adjustable Thickness Cheese Slicer - Premium Stainless Steel Cutting Wire - 1-year Warranty (Silver) by John Hashman

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Poor design, spare cord not available and proprietary - choose another

The overall design of the food slicer is pretty good but there is one design flaw which I will talk about later. Here is my analysis: 1) Slicer wire ends are company property and you cannot use spare wire in the product. They must use their wire to activate their wire attachment system. 2) I couldn't find replacement cables anywhere on Revain and the company doesn't seem to have a website to order them. 3) The disadvantage of the wire attachment system is that the stainless steel wire is mounted in brass blocks that fit into the slots on the unit and are held and tensioned with the attachment screws. So far so good (sort of). Here's the problem: the wire exits the block at a harsh 90 degree angle, which puts a lot of stress on the wire where it enters the brass block. Stainless steel wire is inherently brittle. This applies to stainless steel in general. If you bend stainless steel wire 90 degrees and then tighten it (with machine screws) and then tighten it even more by cutting through a medium-hard cheese like Schweizer or Havarti, the wire won't last more than a couple of slices. Bottom line: if this supplier doesn't change their design to reduce the stress on the stainless steel wire and offers a reasonably priced replacement on the Revain website, don't buy it.
