Some people use label making tools but I like label tape and markers, I find it quicker and easier and you don't have to peel off the backing (and of course it's cheaper). It's better than masking tape because it lasts longer (painting tape dries out over time), peels cleanly (painting tape sometimes leaves a mark), and provides a crisp white background for the label (unlike beige masking tape). Otherwise it's almost the same consistency. It's labeled for audio/video use, but I use it for general household labeling.
