Review on πŸ”¨ Versatile Ardex Feather Finish (Gray), 10 lb. Bag: Ideal for Smooth Surfaces and Patching by Carlos Massey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Used to prepare subfloor to cover leftover scraps, mastic or glue!

In short, we used Ardex Feather Finish to encapsulate the leftover diluted material (mastic, glue, etc.) on the concrete left over from the asbestos tiles in our basement. And it worked great! A little insight: Our first "big" winter project in our new home was cleaning/repairing our pantry in the basement. The floor was partially covered with asbestos sheets. We expertly removed the tile, but the job did not involve removing the remaining crumbs from the tile. We thought about just covering the concrete with vinyl and sealing the case up, but the leftover diluted material had a very musty smell, sort of stinky. (no pun intended). After doing a little research and getting a recommendation from a friend (who is a contractor) we settled on Ardex Feather Finish. Its main job is to prepare the subfloor for coating, whether it's carpeted, tiled, or plank (wood, laminate, etc.) floors. It can be applied to ALMOST any surface, including old floor glue. That's what we were looking for. Ultimately, we used DriCore for the flooring. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Probably the most important! Since our surface was already clean after removing the tiles (washed the whole room, from floor to ceiling), there was no special preparation. To be on the safe side, I wiped again with a damp cloth and let it dry overnight. It was winter when we did this so there was a heater in the room to keep the temp out. We live in Minnesota and there is no air conditioning in the room so it was quite chilly in there. You need to make sure the surface you apply it to is at the minimum temperature recommended in the instructions, otherwise you might have trouble sticking it properly. I started with a small test patch, about 12 x 12. I wanted to make sure it would stick to the leftover thinned material. I checked the test surface after 24 hours and it was rock solid. Then I moved on to the rest. I used a 12 inch flat trowel in broad strokes and blended the area until fairly smooth. It evens itself out so you don't have to be too picky to get the perfect finish. If I remember correctly the consistency is like heavy whipping cream, maybe a bit thicker. (This isn't the grout you use to lay floor tiles.) It dries quickly, so mix up as much as you can to work! To be on the safe side, I left it for a week (cold cellar). ) before installing DriCore. I put it on a year before writing this review and it still sounds good and is holding up well. We considered just leaving the feather trim uncovered, but Ardex says you should use something on top of that. There was one bearing, we didn't want to risk damaging it or wearing it out. So we chose DriCore, which worked well. Hope that helps! Hooray!
