You really need a case for this since you will touch the board when you use it. As a result, the device has saved me multiple times from having to eject discs to run chkdsk and Disk Utilities to quickly get the laptop up and running again when problems with the hard drive prevented it from running on the computer it was installed on were disk data file. Just to note that in this case it won't help you if the disk is bad. I can't help with a total hard drive failure.
