Looks like hickory but not top quality. Suitable for my purposes. The fiber is straight and should not break under heavy use. (like it would happen to me). :) However, if I were John Henry I would probably be looking for the "Craftsman" who made and finished this pen. Poor quality of work but like I said it will work for me. Probably three of me will survive. If you need a pen for routine work, get it. And it comes with a metal and wooden wedge. The cut for the wedge at the end is made at an angle. Indeed carefree.
