Review on Philips Ambiance Equivalent Compatible Assistant by Jerry Delic

It is very good! I bought them for my mother's house.

Very good! I bought these for my mom's house so she could have her first smart home experiences with her Revain Echo. I've tried several different RGB lights so far and Hue has proven to be the best. I found setup easy, pairing was effortless, and the Android app works beautifully. Echo can turn them on and off and set the brightness based on room groups created in the app, or even independent bulbs. The app worked reliably and installed the color changes quickly and easily, just as I expected. I was able to easily connect my phone, her phone, and her Samsung tablet to the hub. All is well over all lights. The color is great, the 3rd gen is a charm, every color given is very close to what I chose in the app. I didn't experience any flickering when dimming or dimming, and the bulbs updated with new settings within a second. They even fit the lamp with a wire loop attached to the lamp. Now for the cons: In networking jargon, a hub is just a bridge. You can use it to control the lights, but as I found out it can't connect the whole ZigBee network. So if you need other smart home devices like smart wall switches (to control traditional lights), sensors, alarms, outlets or whatever else you need, look for another main network hub. However, the Hue hub is reportedly working well, acting as a bridge with devices like Samsung's SmartThings hub (which does a lot more than a router setting up a Wi-Fi network). * The reset button is located on the back of the hub, which means you'll have to remove it after assembly if you ever need to reset it. * I found the light a little dim. 800 lumens isn't very bright, and unfortunately, Phillips doesn't make a brighter Hue bulb just yet. It would be great to have 75w and 100w bulbs.* Finally, the price. The kit is inexpensive, but individual RGB bulbs are only sold in sets of one and at a fairly attractive price per bulb. So if you want to add 12 RGB lights to a chandelier, for example, it will likely cost the same as the lamp itself. It would be very nice if Phillips were to sell the kits at a discounted unit price. There is definitely no doubt, this is a luxury product in the early stages of launch.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
