They are simple and cheap. Basically, it's a pair of wires wrapped around an edge of the device and running to the base. If water (or your fingers) touches both wires, an alarm will go off to let you know the detector is wet. a half-foot barrier that will likely block all but the loudest sounds. Tested by placing them in a dry, clogged sink and running a trickle of water until the alarm sounds. Unfortunately, these baddies barely get above 80dB (according to my sound meter) when standing right next to them. I'm not sure I can hear a noise under my dishwasher unless the room is quiet, but they keep running until they're out of contact with water, so chances are I'm in listen for a few minutes if there is another leak. Finally I am disappointed that they are not as loud as advertised but they come with batteries and correctly detect and beep when in contact with water.
