My old OptiGrill was fun but has become unreliable in the last few uses and has always had limitations such as overheating. . So this feature-rich griddler is its replacement. The griddler is as far away as possible from programmed cooking with the OptiGrill button. The built-in timer does not switch the device on and off either, it just beeps. The Griddler has a nice preheat feature that shows your chosen temperature settings before it heats up (although it takes at least another five minutes to reach an even temperature throughout the grill). Otherwise, it's all skill-based, fully manual cooking (there's a small recipe book, but not even a list of foods with recommended cooking times: you'll have to know or find out for yourself). If you watch Cuisinart's Griddler video, you might notice that the protesters struggle with clunky controls. Right. There are some inconveniences here: buttons that are hard to press, clips that don't engage smoothly or release easily, adjustment sliders that don't like to slide. And the reversible grill/grill "plates" are very heavy and made for the efficiency of cooking like professional tools, not for convenience. So while the non-stick coating works well on the plates, no one can say that "cleaning up is a breeze." Nobody will call Griddler compact either. Mine won't open all the way because the bottom of the cabinet is 17.75 inches higher than my kitchen counter...or won't open unless the griddler is placed on the side (thankfully the end of my counter allows that Placement). Also annoying is that the "floating" top plate doesn't float unless you pop it out of its latches - this requires some tacking when the device is hot. Why not incorporate a small handle? Clumsiness is compensated by flexibility and good food. The first thing I cooked was the Opti-Grill No-No, a pork shoulder steak: it took a little thought to get the time and temperature right, and the meat came out tender and very juicy. My final test was something very difficult for the grill: four chubby, leather-and-boned chicken thighs. I was expecting smoke, maybe flames! But using a moderate temperature on both plates made it possible to avoid all this (the top plate was set at a higher temperature), and the result was well browned, fried and savory. I didn't have any noticeable smoke that the kitchen vent couldn't handle, and even with the parenting griddler raised that high, the counter didn't get sprayed save for four or five small drops. The kitchen did not overheat, there were no strong smells during cooking. In general, I think this is a very successful purchase and recommend it to anyone whose kitchen it is suitable for. Just make sure you have 18 inches clear above the supposed cooking spot. Storage is also an issue because even if you have enough closet or shelf space, it will likely be too high or too low, adding some weight and potential risk. In the end, I got stuck on permanent storage on the countertop. PS Cleaning is greatly simplified by the Panini Oxo Good Grips electric grill and the pressing brush that Revain offers with the grill. This is very effective. That's important because the three-toothed scraper supplied by Cuisinart is almost useless: it matches the horizontal distance between the grill's ridges, but not their height - as if it had been developed by someone unfamiliar with the object being cleaned.
