Light doesn't follow touch on pond

This is a really cute toy. The firefly is adorable and I know my 2 year old niece will love it. I tried tracing the glowing pond but the light did not even come on let alone follow my finger, which is what I expected it to do based off the description. I had to press on it quite hard to even make the light and sounds come on, and the light came on in a different part of the pond from where I pressed. Not sure a 2 year old will be able to get it to work if that much effort is involved. I might have received a defective one since no one else has mentioned this issue.
