Switch is supplied without documentation. I'm not an electrician and someone else did the installation. It was installed in a Hunter ceiling fan. At first I assumed that in order to connect the switch properly I would need to separate the two halves, the blue half and the black half. That was wrong and we put the halves back together before continuing. There are small markings on the black part of the switch. They are difficult to read. These are 1, 2, 3 and L. It is likely that the switch you are replacing has the same markings. Keep the colored wires with the corresponding numbers/letters and the switch will work properly. The wires are inserted into the holes of the switch with slight pressure and fixed there. Make sure each wire is secured inside the switch and cannot be easily pulled out. Reinsert the wire as it pulls out until it clicks into place. If the fan has a rectangular capacitor near the switch, note that this device retains an electrical charge even when power to the fan is off. If you touch the wrong wire you will get a quick spark and/or shock. An electrician should know this, but it's easy for someone not to know.
