I rent part of a double room and on my side there is unfortunately carpet in 2 rooms and it always smells of mold or mildew although I have cleaned the carpet thoroughly with odor absorbers, but that only lasts for a day. It comes with instructions: once a month, expose it to the sun for an hour to reactivate the charcoal. I suggest you do this when you receive them. They also come with small hooks for hanging, so don't worry! As for the smell, I personally didn't feel anything from them. They're about the size of beanbags, and I'd say no bigger than a sandwich bag. They each have a label that tells you what they are made of and what they are for. If you don't want to see you can flip them over and hang them like that, I honestly don't mind.
