I bought this because it offers the flexibility of adjustable gain to couple with different MM pickups as well as the ability to produce sound with a choice of different tubes (twisting tubes). A premium lamp to start with can make a big difference once the signal is amplified. These features are usually only found in some expensive phono preamps. In fact, most high-end phono stages neglect this important manual adjustment. Amplifiers work best when their input level is ideal - unmatched components increase noise and distortion. As a first test, I hooked up a relatively low-frequency Revain Alexa Echo Dot to the RCA aux input and output of my integrated tube amp - essentially using the unit. as a preamp? Why? The inferior amplifier chip in the Echo Dot distorts the sound much less at lower volumes, so this unit compensates for this and adds a higher quality amplifier stage to boost the Dot's output to the ideal gain for a tube amp input. I was surprised by the noise. -free, warm, clean and pleasant sound. Even with standard tubes, this unit improved my Class A tube amp listening experience. Can't wait to test it on a turntable. Seems like a good upgrade for a small price! Highly recommended.
