More than I expected which I don't hate. They are soft enough when wet that I don't feel like itching my feet. It will start smelling after about 2 weeks of use, even if you squeeze out all the water after each use. For me personally the smell isn't that bad as I don't smell it when I get out of the shower, only when I'm in the shower and haven't wet it yet. Plus, you get three, so if it gets unbearable, just start with another one. So far there's only one seed that the company says is fine, so that's cool too. I would say there is no point in using the soft side, in my opinion there is almost no need for it.
