Review on KONG Aluminum Kisa Shock Absorber by Todd Calloway

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Holds up pretty well. Maybe with a stiffer rope everything will work as intended.

I don't understand why the product description says it can't be used more than once. If it protects you from shock loads over 4G, you really shouldn't stress it if you fall on it. I bought it as a reusable "screamer" for via ferrata hikes. So far I have not tested this with Cairnmantle climbing rope. I tried 1/2" heavy duty braided nylon rope. Pulling the rope through all the holes in the panel would barely support my weight (220 lbs). through the hole at the bottom, then around the outside of the panel, then through some holes, again around the outside and through the rest of the holes. With two extra turns the rope holds up pretty well. Perhaps with a stiffer rope, or a smaller climber, it holds up when attached as shown on the sign. Test it with a rope, dry and wet to see how it will hold your weight. The surface is smooth. The device is light. This is smaller than I thought. This is closer to the 4" tall than the 5" listed in the product description.I would trust the product more if the manufacturer didn't state it was rated for a single drop.Throw away the carabiner or rope after a fall. They look just as sturdy as Kong's others equipment performance I may have to test one of them to the point of failure.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad but...
