The best cage for parakeets?

We are buying a cage for our new green cheek hut which we will be buying in a couple of weeks. I wanted a cage with less wire spacing to keep the bird safe but the reviews I read on the cages left me unsure of what size and design to go for. After extensive analysis and review, I finally settled on the Prevue Madison (20" x 20" x 29") and Prevue Park Plaza (24" x 20" x 37"), both in coconut, ordered both, and then compared them side by side. . I really liked the Madison as it was slightly smaller overall, had larger wire gauge, better color and finish, and looked more wearable. However, the cage did not have a stand, and the base of the cage must be supported on a surface that is the same size as the base of the cage, since only the perimeter of the base can support this cage. The cleaning drawers were also small, but other than that the cage was very good quality (made in the USA). Then I unpacked Park Plaza. Upon initial inspection, it was clear that the quality was nowhere near as good as Madison's. While there were no broken wires, some panels were slightly bent and some of the stands were misaligned. It was easy enough to put together until we started assembling the seeds, which required a lot of twisting and swearing. I recommend fully assembling the trap, setting it on the floor, then lifting the cage over the trap and slipping the trap over the bottom half of the cage and into the slot in the cage. The distance between the wires was less in the park. The Plaza cage I liked and the stainless steel bowls are better than the plastic bowls at Madison. But Park Plaza came with just one perch, while Madison came with two. Each had their pros and cons, so what did we choose? It was a difficult decision (because I really only want to buy one cage). I wanted to keep Madison because it was such a well built, beautiful cage, but I was ashamed that I bought a big cage and kept Park Plaza. To be honest I think my kennel would be happy in any cage but I think Madison would be more long lasting.

Pros
  • Set of two perches and two cups
Cons
  • Easy care
