Bought four of these for my family to take on the river. They are comfortable and the bottom is thick enough to protect your feet. Sand penetrates but is not as hard as other sandals or shoes. Now for the size, I think it really depends on the shape of your foot. If your feet are rather narrow or thin, I would choose your size. If you have wide feet, go up half a size. If you feel your feet are average, choose your size or half. I usually wear a 7.5 or 8, but I went with a 7.5 because I was worried the shoes would be too loose. Now this shoe doesn't stretch much so for a wider foot I recommend going up a half size. 7.5 fit me fine but I noticed they hurt my pinky and big toe because your feet swell a bit over time. Especially since I wore them in the water, they were denser. If I were to order them again I would get an 8 just to have a little more room to stretch my toes. My mother has very slim legs and usually wears a 6.5. However, she got a 7 because she thought the extra room would help. Although she found the length of the shoes comfortable, she had to wear socks as the sides were a bit loose.
