This works with my machine (Brother PC8500) but only when I use the stock extender that I have. Not sure if this is the "official" name, but it is an extra length of pole that unscrews and inserts into the regular pole like a puzzle piece. Then it snaps into the leg as usual. At first I couldn't figure out why the shaft was about half an inch shorter and figured out how to fix that - what can I say, I'm no Einstein and forgot I have an extension! However, I love this foot assembly. Beautiful ruffles are easily obtained from it. I had no problems with the needle grip, you just have to be careful to keep the needle centered. I don't know how I did without the ruffle (and my ruffle foot, another important thing!).
