I've punished my neck and back with 45 years of top-level skiing, almost ten years of ultra-distance running, and competitive and aggressive mountain skiing cycling for 32 years. . I consider myself a sofa expert in shoes that offer the smoothest possible ride. Even walking normal distances in shoes without adequate cushioning leads to inflammation of sensitive areas along the spine and all the enduring irritation that accompanies it. Before the HOVR Phantom, my favorite was the Adidas Ultra Boost (also a great plush model). Phantoms have more initial softness (at 165 pounds) than Ultra Boost. Also, the Phantom feels a little less like balancing on soft oil as the Ultra Boost rolls sideways fairly easily. I'm not sure I would walk in the Phantoms. The stack height is too high for me. But for the occasional outing, Phantoms are the best I've tried so far. There are also many miles in Hoka, Altra, Nike Zoom.
