Review on πŸ’Ύ High-Performance Intel 40GB X25-V MLC Solid-State Drive - Retail Box SSDSA2MP040G2R5 by Doug Cardello

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good entry-level SSD

This is a really sanitized Intel X-25M 80Gb (has half the memory and half the channels). Performance is still around 80-90% of the X-25M in most tests. This is a great way to get good SSD performance for very little money, but after installing the OS, a few applications, and a game or two, you run out of space. So I would only recommend it for: 1) Systems where you don't want to store a lot of large files (photos, videos, etc.). For example a netbook or a light laptop. 2) Systems with an additional larger drive for storing images, videos, etc. 3) As part of a raid setup. Here's how I use it. In Raid, the operating system sees two or more drives as one drive, but in reality read and write operations are distributed across the drives, which means better performance and/or more data security depending on how Raid is configured. I'm running two of these in a Raid 0 configuration, which means I get the same amount of storage as an 80GB X-25M, but with better performance for the same price. However, Raid is only intended for advanced users as it has some specific disadvantages which I won't describe here. Overall, I'm very happy with my two X-25V:s. SSDs still don't offer the best value for money, but their impact on overall system performance is incredible. There's no going back once you get used to it.
