You can never go wrong with this

Nobody should buy these Monticello faucet cartridges as they are backed by a lifetime guarantee against leaks and drips. I tried to use Moen's warranty but the phone message said their phones received a lot of calls, no one answered warranty service which is typical these days, instead I was offered a callback appointment, date and time agreed, but no one did not call. This is Moen's guarantee to you. Our house is now 23 years old and two bathtub faucets have been dripping for a while so it's time to do something about it with or without Moen! old faucet. Half of the cartridge can get stuck at the bottom of the cartridge and then you can't get it out leaving you in a big mess as others have posted here. One pulled out easily for me. I used a large area washer over the shaft, screwed the anchor into the cartridge shaft and screwed the butterfly over the washer, gently pushing the cartridge out without prying or damaging anything. The other parted, leaving half to take care of him. The 1224 cartridge is reasonable so buying three was cheap. Working on the first was a nasty surprise after the old one was pulled out as half of it was left in the well. You need a pair of pliers to grab the bottom of the cartridge from the inside, then the jaws push outwards with more pressure to grab the bottom of the cartridge, twist and pull out. Even with these pliers, it took some effort to get the bottom part out. Luckily I have a 60 year old snap ring pliers that was used on stock transmissions years ago. Unlike traditional pliers, they push the jaws outward instead of gripping. Even with these pliers, it was still difficult to pull the bottom half out. Care must be taken not to puncture the cartridge properly, otherwise the cartridge o-rings may not seal fully and may cause an external leak. The mites in the photo are similar to mine. This is achieved through slip-free spreading. When the cartridge was removed and looked down the well it looked bad with green corrosion and a build up of water minerals. I have an auto (brake) honing cylinder that fits this well perfectly and I have been cleaning the well with my drill motor. These 1224 cartridges are actually separable by design, allowing o-rings to be factory installed on the inside. Because of this, they sometimes diverge when removed, causing potential disasters for those unprepared to deal with them. My first intention was to replace the 4 o-rings but the first cartridge was leaking worse than before so I bought these 3 cartridges instead. Ring repair, maybe some other time. Sink shut-off valves won't close after 23 years, so I didn't know if the hot or cold side was leaking. I made a mistake and used two new cartridges on the same faucet. I've listed the o-rings required for cartridge repair for anyone wanting to go down that route. When replacing a cartridge for the first time, take photos during disassembly to avoid confusion when reassembling. 7/16 AD X 1/4 ID X 3/32. --- 3/8 OD x 1/4 ID x 1/16. -2 of each size - 3/4 OD X 9/16 ID X 3/32
