Review on 📻 Sony ICF-F10: Portable AM/FM Two-Band Battery Transistor Radio by Billy Dotie

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Inexpensive - portable audio and video

This is a decent radio at a good price. Mine seemed to have good sensitivity and not bad selectivity (pulled out weak signals well and separated signals that were close together on the dial well). The sound quality from a single speaker was good for the price. He is simple and easy. The tuning and volume controls are on the front panel. The three-position switch, AM and FM, from bottom to top, is on the right, along with the headphone jack. I'd rather align the on-off switch with the volume knob than the AM-FM band switch because when you put the radio on FM you have to go through the AM band first, and that's where I work my radio into an office full of computers, it leads to an instantaneous explosion of electronic computer noise. That's a small objection, more of a matter of taste. The headphone jack accepts a standard miniature stereo headphone plug, but the radio is mono only and sound only comes from the left side of the stereo headphone. I'm assuming the radio is set up that way for the sake of simplicity. Stereo headphones are now far more common than the single-ended headphones that such a radio would have had in the past. The radio does not have a power cord or outlet to allow the use of an external AC transformer. . The only source of food is a pair of D cells. This may not be a problem as the batteries will most likely last a long time. The radio manual said the battery would last 220 hours on AM or 200 hours on FM, but didn't say if that was continuous playback or a limited time per day. (Battery life tends to last longer if you use it for a half hour, an hour or so and then turn the radio off for a while.) The radio is a little less than 8 inches long. I guess he weighs 1 to 2 kilos. I have fancier radios that I try to pick up weak and weak stations with. They have better selectivity and sensitivity than the Sony ICF-F10 but are more difficult to use and much more expensive. I wouldn't recommend this kit for a 'DXing' hobbyist with a weak signal, but it seems to work well on any radio station strong enough that you really want to listen to it for an hour or two at a time. It's definitely good. Especially if you have spare flashlight D-cells; This radio uses the same D cells. It is also a good radio for garage, outdoor work, picnic and the like. It'll serve you well, and for the price, dropping it in a stream will be a lot less of a pain than doing the same with a fancier digital device. I bought it for use in my office. It's great for that because it picks up a clear signal very well and still can't get weak and rare signals through office fluorescent lights and computer electronics.
