I bought these for lab kits for my students. Much better than I expected. It's bloody difficult to connect your own resistors to each LED. For the uninitiated, using multiple bare LEDs with a single resistor is a terrible idea, and some will burn out faster while others will dim. So you usually need to connect a resistor to each one, but not here. They built resistors into the shrink wrap which is great. I didn't power them with 12V as I only need them for these labs, but even with a regular 9V battery they are pretty bright and don't work. They don't seem to heat up at all (this may change at 12v and packed together, but probably not by much). The light in them is a bit more directional. LEDs are naturally directional, but they typically diffuse the light with the housing. They come out in a recognizable cone-shaped beam, which is great for my purposes anyway, and it doesn't matter if you're using them as indicator lights or anything like that.
