Now I'm a firm believer in gravel packs with live plants. Less work, no searching and changing activated carbon filters. The water remains very clear (10% water change per week). Plant roots really LOVE the slow flow of water that carries nutrients to them and feels very good. One of the "tricks" is to use the power head to move the water stones, not the air stones. The power head moves MUCH more water than the gentle current created by the air stones and it is VERY QUIET. No constant humming of the air pump and less water loss through evaporation. EDIT: My 33 gallon tank has a head of 270 GPM. That works out to 9 water changes per hour through gravel. Now I complete it (belt and suspenders?) with a small Whisper external filter with an activated carbon filter. The canister filter stays very clean, I set it to its lowest setting of 25 gph, one water change per hour to ensure all unwanted chemicals are always removed from the aquarium water. I change my charcoal once a quarter. Gravel is a biofiltration system.
