Wireless meat thermometer!

I have cooked for 2 chefs with the MEATER wireless meat thermometer and am very happy with it. MEATER is a simple probe with great features. The decisive factor for my purchase was the purchase of a new outdoor grill with built-in grill. For roast and turkey cooking plans, I found MEATER attractive because there simply aren't any wires to deal with. Great, but how well will it work? The price was low so I bought two to try. MEATER is a rugged little probe that comes in its own charging case and is battery operated. It turns on when removed from the case and turns off when reinserted. It slides easily into a roast or turkey, connects quickly to my MEATER phone app, and provides continuous readings throughout the cooking process, including grill core temp, meat core temp, and expected cook time. By connecting to the cloud with my iPad, I can take my phone with me and still get readings, even when I'm running to the store quickly. The Bluetooth connection dropped a couple of times, probably because I was indoors and the heavy grill cover was closed, but moving my phone or iPad closer to that side of the house helped reconnect. I was then able to move my other device to a different location since that connection was via WiFi and the cloud and not Bluetooth. The MEATER probe gave me a temperature of 125 degrees, which was my goal. After checking twice with a conventional thermometer, I found that the internal temperature of the roast is closer to 120 degrees, as is the appearance of the meat. However, on a full sized turkey, I found perfect accuracy with the MEATER probe. I think I made a mistake cooking the first rib roast by holding the probe tip too close to the carbide skewer, which of course transmitted the higher temperature to the probe tip. See the third picture above. Of course, this isn't a problem, even for anything other than a skewer, but when grilling food you should be mindful of probe tip placement. I should add that after this first roast I contacted customer service and they got back to me quickly. Very grateful! I love the MEATER probe and look forward to more cooking with it, both on and off the grill. It will be interesting to compare the traditional in-oven wired meat probe to the MEATER probe. I'll probably use both for a while just to compare, but I suspect MEATER will win!

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
