We usually have Costcos Starbucks French Roast at home and I love it with our automatic drip coffee maker with paperless/reusable coffee filter. This morning I made coffee with this coffee press and I have to say that the taste was noticeably better with the press than with the drip method. I suspect this is because the grist has more time to soak in the water than when the water goes through the drip filter. As with both, we get some sludge and oils so it's not a big deal, although if you're used to a paper filter you won't generally see fines (sludge) or oils. The press feels strong and durable, the welds are smooth, and the powder coating is even and provides the grip you need. The hourglass is housed in a plastic capsule with a round magnet on the back, so you can ONLY attach it to a small area at the front of the press just below the spout. The magnet is strong enough to hold it in place and not move; I would estimate the magnetic contact area to be about 2 inches wide and 3 inches high. The press is well packaged and comes with an extra large o-ring, a small o-ring, a large screen and a small screen. There are no instructions in the box, the thermometer arrived in packaging separate from the case above. The temp sensor struggled to fit into the flask, I had to twist and push hard enough to break off the top to get it in, but it went in undamaged in the end. However, now that it is installed in the piston, there is significant resistance when attempting to remove it. The cleaning wasn't too bad, there were some coffee crumbs stuck between the top and bottom plunger screens, but that didn't help. It is difficult to remove with a finger and running water. Overall I have a few questions/concerns about this: 1. There are no numbers on the temp gauge so I have no idea what the blue, green and red zones mean when the temp changes2. The upper edge of the housing is roughly machined, giving it the appearance of a roughly serrated blade. I may try filing it down so I don't cut my hand cleaning it up. 3. I wish there was some sort of internal marking on the inside of the case to indicate the amount of water.
