This is my second Krups kettle. The first lasted many, many years (7 or 8 I think) and served well from day one. This has been revised and has defects. After about 2 weeks of use it started to squeak and howl when heated. They were pieces of metal moving against each other. Approximately in 2 weeks calmed down and noise stopped. About 6 months later it happened again for a few days and then stopped again. It's been quiet here ever since: growing pains, I guess. My biggest complaint is the temperature control. Maybe I'm just a Neanderthal or not bougie enough to need this level of sophistication in heating water for tea and coffee, but I think that's silly. I just want my water to boil, okay! But often this is not the case. About half the time it shuts off before cooking and needs to be restarted. About 10% of the time you have to do this twice. The rest of the time it behaves as it should. So the bottom line is that automatic maintenance takes about half the time or less. I can handle it, you know, I'm just about soft enough to live with this over-engineered, buggy piece of not-quite-automatic, but paying $50 for 50% annoys me. I've owned this unit for 1-1/2 years now and when it expires I'll be looking for something other than Krups. As they say, "You pay money and you make a choice." Each morning starts with an adventure, but I end up boiling the water.
