Why didn't I read the negative reviews first? I now have the rather expensive University Products bookbinding needles - a set of 5 with eyelets that are too small for my thread making them useless for my bookbinding needs. They definitely won't have any waxed threads or twines that I've ever seen. You can have a thin silk thread but I don't use it. I create brochure inserts for my magazine. The body of the needle is thick (heavy duty) and durable, and the length of the needles is as advertised. For bookbinding, I need a needle to put the bookbinding thread (string, cotton, etc.) through a pre-made hole and guide it. If I can' If I don't thread through the eye of the needle, then the size and length of the needle don't matter. I don't expect the eyes to be huge. The problem is that the eyes are generally too small. If the eyes were narrow and long, I could probably work with that. They're narrow and short (perhaps the standard for fashion sewing?) and just can't fit the thread of my bookbinding without breaking it. I hate returning things and after ordering hundreds, I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've done it. As I also received a bookbinding awl that was missing a sharp point in the same order (match noted) and luckily I ordered through Prime, I will be returning both items.
