Review on πŸŽ™οΈ ROCCAT Torch Studio-Grade USB Microphone, Black: High-Performance Audio Recording for Professionals, ROC-14-910 by Adam Cornelison

Fantastic entry-level mic.

I love the design of the ROCCAT flashlight. The microphone's low-profile form factor is both attractive and unobstructed. It fades slightly into the background but looks cool enough to be seen. The RGB is done fairly well and is bright but not obnoxious. Although a little light, the base keeps the microphone in good balance. The mixer-style control knobs and sliders on the base move smoothly and are easy to use. The microphone itself is easy to rotate and swivel to achieve the best positioning. Just in case, the mic can be detached and placed on the boom if that is your setup. The flashlight comes with all USB-C cables for each installation. Three acquisition schemes suited me. I mainly used it for business meetings and cardioid mode games. I was told that the sound quality was excellent. There were no "underwater effects" or power outages, even at about 5 feet. I will say that my mechanical keyboard was raised and a little distracting depending on where the mic was placed, so keep that in mind. The best result was when the mic was about 3 feet from my face and to the side or in front of the keyboard. When I recorded my voice I thought my voice might need a little more bass, but it's still represented well due to the 24-bit/48kHz sampling. In interview mode, I was impressed with the range and channel separation. Whisper mode simply increases the gain significantly and narrows the pickup towards the sound source, and in most cases I found it too large or unnecessary. Muting the mic is pretty fun. All you have to do is wave your hand over the microphone like a Jedi and the microphone will be muted. This is great when you need to mute the sound and don't want to mess around with software or press a button that can be annoyingly loud. However, you have this option with the volume slider. On the back of the base you have a 3.5mm jack for connecting a quality monitor headset, additional stages of amplification and RGB brightness. Speaking of RGB lighting, not only does it look pretty, it also serves a functional purpose. The RGB on the side shows the trigger level, changing color depending on the mode and turning red when the sound is off. There's also a little sign that says "ALIVE" which is pretty cool. I think ROCCAT has rocked for the last few years and Torch is no exception - no pun intended. The simplistic design, functional controls, cute but useful RGB lighting, and decent audio make this an easy recommendation for anyone who streams, records, or works occasionally and wants a lot more than basic headsets or standard laptop mics.
